Port Augusta

Well we have to say, for the Gateway to the North, Port Augusta is a strange little city. We expected it to be a bustling town with cafes and shops cashing in on the tourists but......... well it just isn’t! It is basically your typical transient town with the basics. Enough for you to stock up and get the hell out.  On a positive note the diesel is $1.49. We decided to stay two nights at the Port Augusta Big 4 as we needed to recover from our colds, replan our packing arrangements in the van and buy fruit and vegetables as South Australian’s are petrified our vegetables have something atomic on them and you can’t bring them over the border (mind you, they can bring their veg into VIC but whatever!). So today was a bit of a rest day with sightseeing (well as much as you can here).

We took Glenno to have a haircut because he decided before we left he would have a go at cutting/styling his hair himself. As he was wearing a beanie no one realised until we reached the Van Park. (look closely at the previous photos and you will see) The kids and I decided we would not be travelling with a Mohican hence Glenno’s change of hair style in photos! Feeling much braver to walk next to Glenno again we strolled along the waterfront, went to the Water Tower Lookout and the skate park. The skate park was a ripper. We had the place to ourselves and the kids tore it up on their scooters. Even the big kids had a lash. The Big 4 is great with friendly service and very clean facilities. We would recommend staying here. Tomorrow we continue our journey to Coober Pedy without Alby Mangles :(((

And we're off

Not a great start to the trip, no DVD chargers, both indicator terminals on the van were not connecting and the sealed Anderson plug had lost connection with the wire all before we had driven out the gate. All fixed in just over an hour, then almost a head on with a STUPID truckie who didn't see the car in front of us when he overtook a caravan! Lucky the old bloke with the caravan delayed his heart attack for 30 seconds and pulled off the road to the left. A long day in the car, raining most of the way. Resting up in Port Augusta to get rid of this cold, a bit of pottering and reorganizing the ute and tightening the bearings on the van. We have already met some like minded people at the Van Park. The guy next to us is like our own personal Alby Mangles. A great guy who has done this trip 5 times before. He gave Mel some tips on making damper and she wants to take him with us to Darwin!

An excited Stevo family at 9.00am

A cranky and cold Glenno soldering something, not sure what!
A very happy Stevo family again!
